Blepharoplasty, or eyelid lift surgery, can remove the excess skin on your upper and lower eyelids and remove the puffiness around your eyes - features that make you look older and more tired looking than you are. In severe cases, the excess upper eyelid skin and fat may actually droop down and interfere with your vision. Eyelid lift surgery restores the normal skin tone to your eyelids and provides you with a more rested and youthful appearance.
Eyelid lift surgery can be done alone or in conjunction with other facial plastic surgery, such as a facelift or other facial rejuvenation procedures for your face skin, such as a chemical peel. Whether the eyelid surgery would require operating on your upper eyelids, lower eyelids or all four eyelids depends on your goals and your current eyelid anatomy.
Eyelid lift surgery is done in the office under local anesthetic with monitored IV sedation. You will have a light sleep for 1-2 hours and be going home within a half-hour after the operation. The surgery is very safe. Recovery from the operation is quick, pain is minimal and bruising is often resolved within a week. You should plan on being swollen for the first week after the operation and most people go back to work ~10 days after eyelid surgery.
The incisions are located in the upper eyelids - incisions that are hidden in the natural crease of your eyelids. Additional incisions maybe required under the eyelashes of the lower eyelid. The incisions allow removal of the excess skin and the bulging fat. The scars often fade rapidly and are barely noticeable once the healing is complete. The result is a natural, youthful appearance with a less tired look.
Medical conditions such as hypothyroidism, Graves' disease, chronic dry eyes, high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease may make eyelid lift surgery more risky. A detached retina or glaucoma is also reason for caution. Eyelid surgery alone won't lift sagging eyebrows, that requires a brow lift. Eyelid lift surgery also will not remove the dark circles around your eyes. However, skin rejuvenation methods such as a chemical peel will relieve the dark circles around your eyes when done in conjunction with eyelid lift surgery.
